The new Where the World Meets was created in partnership with the International Outreach Team, a group of representatives from each of the cultures in the Diamond Neighborhoods. The Team works with the Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation to create an international flavor at Market Creek Plaza and throughout the community. They partnered with Where the World Meets in the spring of 2006 and recommended a new approach that combined the retail store with meaningful cultural experiences.
The Team talked with community residents, who suggested the store carry reasonably priced items "from home" and invited others into their cultures. The cultural experience continues outside the store, where seven cultural houses sit on an outdoor courtyard accessible to residents and customers. Each house – representing African American, Somalian, Filipino, Mexican, Laotian, Sudanese, and Samoan cultures – displays work from local artists and cultural items imported from around the globe.
